The kaupapa of Te Ataarangi is a major force in the language revitalisation movement in Aotearoa for the last 45 years. It was developed by Kāterina Te Heikōkō Mataira and Ngoingoi Pewhairangi and embedded in Te Tai Tokerau with the unwavering dedication of our Manutea, Rahera Shortland. Under her direction and tutelage we, the teachers of Ako Raukura, rise. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned speaker, you’ll inevitably feel a strong sense of connection to share this kaupapa with others. We are the reinforcements of te reo Māori speakers contributing to the survival of our language and Māori culture.
The Te Ataarangi methodology of teaching favours kinaesthetic learners using coloured cuisenaire rods that are manipulated around to entice learning. Our community classes bring Te Reo Māori learning to life in a supportive, whānau-friendly environment.
